Hair Loss Prevention 411

Age is a reality we all must face. For most ageing men, it is not unusual to develop a large beer belly, thick bushy hair on the nose and ears, and yes, hair loss. There are a few men who can retain a head full of hair but for the rest, baldness or some degree of hair fall is inevitable. By the age of 30, around 60% of men will start to experience the beginnings of hair loss. Approximately 80% of men will develop advanced hair thinning by the age of 50. There is still good news, though. There are a lot of ways that can be done to slow down or better yet, stop this condition.

A common familial type of hair loss is called androgenetic alopecia. This is a genetic type of hair loss wherein the hair follicles become sensitive to a hormone called dihydrotestosterone or DHT. In this case, a hair loss treatment is need and there are a lot of effective products on the market today that can address this problem.
On the other hand, there are other conditions that can cause increased hair fall like stress, certain medications, extreme diets, infections, and even hair styling or colouring products. These conditions are all preventable and below are some important and easy hair loss prevention techniques that you can do.

Take it easy

Stress is a big contributing factor in hair loss. In Asia, three out of four men blame stress for their thinning hair. Stress triggers a condition called telogen effluvium and this can cause massive hair fall within a short period of time. Taking it easy and controlling stress levels is an important step in preventing premature hair fall.

Consume protein rich foods

Our hair is primarily made up of protein so it is common sense to eat protein rich foods like lean meat, fish, and soya. In addition, fish is an excellent sources omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin D. Both nutrients have shown potential in preventing hair loss in patients undergoing chemotherapy. More fish, more hair.

Vitamins, nutrients and iron

B complex vitamins are an essential in keeping hair healthy and strong. Vitamin B7 or biotin induces fast healthy hair growth. Vitamin B5 or panthenol is a B vitamin that is easily absorbed into the skin and helps to condition the hair and scalp.

Inositol is now labeled as an essential nutrient and no longer a vitamin. Nevertheless, it is needed to induce healthy hair growth, similar to biotin. In animal experiments, hair loss was observed when inositol was removed from their diet, and the hair grew back when this nutrient was included in the diet.

Though Iron deficiency anemia is common among women, it is also important to maintain healthy iron levels in men because lack of it can also lead to increased hair fall. Our blood needs iron to carry oxygen to different organs and tissues of the body and this includes the hair follicles. Without proper follicle oxygenation, hair miniaturization can occur, and this can eventually lead to balding.

Hygiene

An oily, dirty scalp and hair can potentially lead to increased hair fall because this is an ideal medium for fungal growth like dandruff. Though dandruff may not directly cause hair loss, it the associated hair pulling when we scratch our heads that causes the hair fall. Regular shampooing can prevent oil and dirt build-up in the scalp. For dandruff, an over the counter anti-dandruff shampoo can easily treat this.

Join the club

In everything in life there is no sure thing. In the end, even after all the effort, the genes will still roll out the true outcome of the scalp. Of course, even if we know this will happen, it is always best to put up a good fight against hair loss. The truth is that there is nothing to worry about because you are not alone and who knows, you might even look better and younger being a bald man.
